A Fixed Retainer Might Be Needed to Maintain the Position of Your Teeth

Posted .

Traditional braces are often called for to correct significantly misaligned teeth. Our orthodontist typically uses them to address overcrowded teeth and other alignment issues like malocclusion. The treatment process calls for periodic adjustments to gradually move your teeth into their ideal alignment.

Once this is done our orthodontist can remove the braces hardware. At this point, you will need to use some type of retainer to prevent any residual tension in your periodontal sockets from causing your teeth to relapse out of their new position.

A Hawley retainer is often the most effective option for preserving the alignment of the upper teeth. This type of oral appliance is molded from a special acrylic material that conforms to the shape of your mouth while interlocking with specific teeth.

A patient who needed significant realignment might need an additional fixed retainer to help hold the teeth in place. It is more common for maintaining a corrected underbite or an area where multiple overcrowded teeth needed to be realigned.

The fixed retainer is essentially a rigid metal band that Dr. Galati carefully cements behind the teeth. It cannot be removed, which will require some extra focus in your daily oral hygiene routine.
